Continually we kept getting rejected for conversations. Not only my campus group, but the other group from my project as well. It was so strange since the two days prior were just the opposite.

Dylan, our staff campus group leader, suggested that if we wanted to, we could step off campus for that day and go to our coffee time location and just pray and spend some time in the Word over the campus.

Coffee time is a once a week whole group conversation experience. Basically each campus group chooses a coffee house or cafe near the campus they are ministering to, and sets up a time each week to invite a bunch of our Greek friends to for a chance to meet others and have a spiritual conversation altogether over coffee of course.

The coffee house Dylan found earlier in the week for us is super cool. Like the tv show Friends! Its a purple building and inside is super awesome and modern.

There are pictures from the show and of the cast all over the inside. They play really cool music and have some yummy looking drinks and foods.

On the top level where we had reserved has couches and bean bag chairs small over. Unfortunately for our first coffee time, no Greek students showed up.

It gave us a chance to check out the cafe and order some drinks. We see them playing it on campus all the time.

My campus group decided it would be good to learn it so that we can play with others and strike up conversations that way. There was a little kiosk on the street near the cafe and one of my teammates Trevor went down and bought a deck of Tichu cards.

Wednesday night was bible study and this is where we are with staff members and about people of your same gender. The girls in my bible study are super sweet and I really enjoy our times together I mean, I love everything but sometimes small groups are nice.

In bible study we are digging into 1st Thessalonians, which is cool because we have enough bible studies to do one chapter a week! After bible study we packed for our few days at a camp called Porto Astro.

Due to the length of this post and my level of sleepiness, I will close up these thoughts and share about our Porto Astro experience soon! You can specifically pray for my friends Elizabeth, Anastasia and Gary to come into a living relationship with the Father and for more connections and friendships to be made on campus.

The Lord is so good and has continued to take care of us and bless us. Sending hugs to you all from overseas!

We made it! A little more than 24 hours ago my team and I arrived at the airport in Athens and so did ALL of our luggage. Praise God! After arriving at our hostel we immediately dropped off our belongings and headed straight toward our first real Greek meal.

It was awesome and not just because we had been eating little snacks and airplane food for the 24 hours prior. Greek food is so good!

Walking to and from the restaurant at night was neat because there was so much going on. As soon as we got back we showered and went to bed. We began our day with a classic Greek breakfast the hostel provides, 2 hard boiled eggs, a roll with butter and jam, and coffee, and headed out to our first activity.

We went to Mars Hill! It was the coolest thing to read those verses in the same location it happened! There are references to other gods and idols in this passage and it makes sense based on its location in Athens why and how Paul said those things.

Cool, right? It makes reading the word become so real. They do the same thing all year long partnered with long-term staff that we are doing on summer project but there is a lot less people on their team than we have.

The STINTers definitely had a wealth of knowledge about the culture and shared great tips with us as they will continue to do the next few days over briefing.

So, this afternoon we hiked to the top of the tallest landmark in Athens. It was so difficult! It was hot and steep and there were a million stairs and the air pressure made it so thick.

I was sweaty and out of breath. Whew, it was rough. To and from that part of the city we took the Metro in Athens. Below is a silly picture of me and some of my new project friends waiting to get on the Athens Metro for the first time.

After some shopping and dinner, we played games to keep ourselves awake before we were allowed to go to bed jet lag problems.

It was great having fun and building community with some of the people on my project. It was hilarious how people tried to determine who the townspeople were versus the mafia.

Yassas pronounced yah-ss-ah-s. Owning the cd now and it regularly plays in my car, this song is one of my favorites.

I knew raising support was going to be a huge task but I did not know it was going to be this hard. And I cannot get on the plane without being fully funded.

But then I remember my God is a God of the impossible. Among other miracles, Jesus walked on water Matthew , He gave a blind man sight Luke , and He was raised from the dead Mark And not only that, but the reason he died was out of complete and utter unconditional love for us.

If you order a Greek salad I bet nothing is left other than a feeling of being truly replete. Traditional Greek food for a snack or light lunch, is often not over complicated, take the image below.

Just simple doorstep slices of bread, traditionally dried or a day old, topped with finely chopped fresh tomato, crumbly feta, black olives and a heavy flake of dried fresh oregano, naturally soaked in extra virgin olive oil.

The biggest love during my trips to Greece are when I meet the locals, who can really COOK. Let me introduce you to one of my favourite ladies, Shia Athansia picture below , who with her wonderful family run an amazing supermarket on the outskirts of Gialova, 5 minutes from Pylos.

Every time I go to shop I am distracted by the wonderful aromas wafting from her kitchen at the back of the shop, and it is here that she introduces me to local dishes, using aubergines, octopus, or fish and the freshest hand grown fruit and vegetables I have seen for a long time.

For me though one of the greatest, simplest pleasures is the picking of ripe figs from my wee tree in my garden. Truly worth the wait. The tree produced the sweetest, ripest figs I have tasted for years.

I certainly congratulated and spoke with my tree every day and you know what, in the morning more arrived. Mad, maybe … but being a true lover of Mother Earth , if talking to my tree and showing love is what it takes, you bet I will happily do it all day long.

Another great pastime during the summer is to get the pizza oven aflame. If like us you are entertaining volumes of friends or family, the pizza oven is definitely the way to go.

It was just so refreshing and heartwarming, it had me smiling all the time. It was also full of amazing detailed descriptions that really travelled you there at Thakos!!!

I've found very few books with the ability to transport me right then and there but this was definitely one of them! I highly recommend it and give it 5 sta This was, obviously, not a story that hasn't been told before.

I highly recommend it and give it 5 stars with all of my heart! Jul 10, Julie rated it it was amazing. This is the perfect summer read and although I read it from the comfort of my garden, I could feel myself transported to Greece.

This is a reminder that life doesn't always go to plan and not everyone should be given a second chance! It was wonderful to see the characters develop and show what they are capable of.

A light-hearted beach read with a greek soul. An enjoyable read which brought a little bit of Greek sunshine to a cloudy April afternoon The heroine, Mandy, goes to Rhodes on a whim after being told to take time off work as a result of her errant, cheating husband.

This pervades throughout the book and at times I wanted to give her a shake and tell her to wake up and smell the coffee! The scenes set in Liverpool were well articulated and I could easily imagine the setting and the buildings.

The scenes set in the pub were vivid and realistic, adding to my enjoyment of the story. Her writing reminds me of Mandy Baggot whose books I adore for a pick-me-up , possibly as the heroine shares her name!

Mandy and Danny have been together since school with only a small break before marrying some eight years earlier. Reme Mandy and Danny have been together since school with only a small break before marrying some eight years earlier.

Remembering a favorite childhood holiday in Greece, Mandy books a hotel and flight and is off to Rhodes for a near-fortnight stay.

Far from the bustling and bright seaside she remembered, the hotel is sparkling clean but run down, many shops are shuttered, the pool is up the road at another small establishment, and the all-inclusive resort is teeming with both tourists and money — leaving little for the older, established or now shuttered community.

Despite the changes, the time is exactly what Mandy needs, first to regroup and relax, then to test the waters with the very handsome Costas, and think of a way to make her childhood memories come to life.

Starting the wheels in motion for renovations and a music festival — Mandy heads back to Liverpool — still working out details and ideas, and helping in every way she can with the festival.

Greece is calling….. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Review first appeared at I am, Indeed Something in the style of Mandy Baggots books set in Greece.

Turns out, My Big Greek Summer was completely different read. It is without a doubt a contemporary read, but not the fluffy, set your mind to zero and feel like you are on holiday in Greece kind of read.

It was much more, an empowering read about a young woman having to start from zero and findi 3. It was much more, an empowering read about a young woman having to start from zero and finding out who she truly is.

If you are expecting a light beach read, this might not be the book for you. Mandy, the very likable main character doesn't even get to Rhodes in the first quarter of the book.

The first part of the story is set in Liverpool, Mandy's hometown and explores Mandy's family, her crashing marriage and her job.

I quite liked that because you truly got to know Mandy before joining her on one wild adventure in Thakos. I loved that Sue really brought Mandy to live.

Sue Roberts steers away from the classical stories in this segment. Romance isn't a very big part of the story to be quite honest.

The focus is really on Mandy, fighting for her marriage and developing her life after the deceit of her husband. I loved how friendship, family and self exploration were the main focus of the story and the romance which was pretty great to be honest was a side aspect.

But the ending I just have to take one star down for that ending. One moment we are in Liverpool with Mandy's mom, the next we are four years later.

My Big Greek Summer was quite a detailed read. It spends exploring all the aspects of the story. But then towards the end it felt like the inspiration was gone and everything was resolved in 3 pages.

I felt cheated out of the story I loved. I can't really understand how this could have happen. Another 20 or 30 pages would have done the story true justice.

Why can't we join Mandy when she goes to the Greek wedding, where her live changes for ever. Now we just have to read "Oh and I went to a wedding in Greece and guess what nothing was ever the same.

All in all My Big Greek Summer is a decent read. Not a bubbly, lovely chick lit with a simmering romance and a overall vacation feeling.

It a novel that deals with harder topics and is centered around self exploration and finding what you truly want in your life.

I read this book when I was on holiday in April and I loved it- it is the perfect holiday read and I was lucky enough to be able to read it when we were having gorgeous weather at the seaside - bliss!

It is such an easy read and the story is really enjoyable. I loved the characters and the writing style really brought the setting to life for me, it is a great, feel good story and one I have already recommended to family and friends!

Mandy has been married to her childhood sweetheart for years and so is devastated when she discovers that he has been cheating on her and throws him out.

Needing to get away she books to go to Thakos the Greek village that she visited as a child with her parents and sets about rediscovering herself!

I loved the Greek part of the book and the way that Mandy feels that she has to rediscover herself - breaking up with someone that you have been with for so long and from such a young age can mean the Mandy has been married to her childhood sweetheart for years and so is devastated when she discovers that he has been cheating on her and throws him out.

I loved the Greek part of the book and the way that Mandy feels that she has to rediscover herself - breaking up with someone that you have been with for so long and from such a young age can mean the you lose your own identity - my only criticism was that the ending was too rushed I was fortunate enough to come across this fabulous book.

I enjoyed the Greek atmosphere that Mandy immersed herself into trying to come out of her shell shocked state. I laughed at funny moments, felt sad during others and cheered Mandy on as she bravely faced the challenges life can sometimes throw at us.

What a wonderful self reflecting read that put a warm smile in my heart. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Readers also enjoyed.

Maura Alia Badji. Made it as written. Served with toasted pita bread. Got better over a day or two. Salting the cucumbers and rinsing them after 15 mins made a big difference and definitely worth the extra effort.

Kept them crunchy for days till we ate it all. Valerie Meister. Fabulous salad. A little different from my usual effort and I think I will stick with this one.

I made 2 differences - I had to add 1 clove of Russian garlic only because I love garlic and I used lemon juice instead of red wine vinegar mainly because I had no red wine vinegar.

Absolutely delicious. If you are looking for a Greek salad recipe go with this one. Angel Petty. Hot Dish. I am not big into salads and I am not sure why I even tried this.

However, my wife and I absolutely loved it, and it will be something I make often. To us, it was a meal in itself. This is so delicious!

I have made it many times and it always disappears from the fridge. It stays crisp even after a couple days.
